IF YOU ARE GOING to fire up the barbecue this holiday
weekend, be sure to check out chef and cookbook author
Bruce Aidells’ rub recipes for grilled meats, chicken and
fish on pages 26 and 27.
Speaking of chicken, you’ll find no fake, plumped
Foster Imposters at Costco. As CEO Ron Foster explains in
the cover story, long-term Costco supplier Foster Farms
continues to uphold the family legacy and core values of
quality, honesty and excellence established three generations ago to produce top-quality chicken. I think you’ll be
impressed with Foster Farms’ treatment of animals,
employees and the environment.
July is furniture month at Costco. This issue includes a special section focused on
homes, filled with decorating tips, articles and new products, starting on page 37. Our furniture buyers offer their top picks, while HGTV design star David Bromstad suggests
inexpensive ways to create a splash in your home. You’ll also find instant savings on
housewares and small appliances, starting on page 40. Of course, we also carry furniture
365 days a year on Costco.com, for delivery directly to your home or office. You’ll find
examples of our online furniture in the Costco.com section following page 57.
If you haven’t used Costco Travel to book your vacations, you are missing out on great
savings and service from our dedicated travel specialists. You can learn more about Costco
Travel on page 61 and by clicking “Travel” at the top of the home page on Costco.com.
Finally, consumer reporter Pat Volchok can help you choose between a laptop or netbook computer in her Buying Smart article on page 62. We have a full back-to-school
selection of laptops, netbooks and desktops in the warehouses and on Costco.com.
As we prepare to celebrate our country’s independence this month, we thank the
brave men and women who serve in our military forces for the sacrifices they and their
families make every day to protect our freedom.
Happy Fourth of July from all of us at Costco! C

I RECENTLY turned 21.
Yes, I know the picture at the left shows me looking a
bit older. (If it were more current, I’d look even older.)
The 21 I am talking about is the number of years I
have worked at Costco. That may sound as if I’m one of the
longest-serving employees here, but the truth is that when
it comes to management, I am something of a newbie.
This thought was brought home recently with the
retirement of the first executive hired at Costco, Dick
The fact is, like several other of the founding executives of Costco, Dick had worked
with Jim at two previous companies: Price Club (which merged with Costco in 1993) and
FedMart. In total, the pair worked side by side for 49 years.
This brings me to a point about continuity. Among the many aspects of Costco’s success, I would put high on the list the fact that not only has the founding management team
stayed essentially intact for 27 years, but their roots go even deeper. These are people whose
approaches and relationships with one another have stood the test of time. They are people
who can just about finish one another’s sentences, while bringing forth their own thinking.
Far from stifling new thinking, the deep relationships of this team have set clear standards for everyone at Costco—standards that focus on innovation, integrity, discipline and,
yes, having a bit of fun along the way.
Thank you for helping to set the pace, Dick. C
